Understanding the river
The key gauge for the township is Mangaroa at Ōhura Town Bridge. A stage of 5 m or higher is considered hazard level — flooding of low-lying areas becomes likely.

If a flood threatens (placeholder)
- Move valuables, vehicles and stock to higher ground early.
- Have a grab bag ready: water, food, meds, torch, phone charger, documents.
- Never drive or walk through floodwater — it's deeper and faster than it looks.
